With its maiden flight on March 15, 1941, Philippine Airlines (PAL) became Asia's first airline. Since then, PAL has become a staunch vehicle of national growth and one of the most respected carriers around the world. Today, it has a young and modern fleet of aircraft and a route network that spans 31 foreign cities and 29 domestic points. PAL's excellent service has won the hearts of travelers worldwide. This trademark has distinguished it from the pack and has stood guard in an environment that has grown more competitive by the day.
In 1992, PAL expanded its service philosophy by founding its community relations arm, the Philippine Airlines Foundation (PALF), an accredited disaster relief, crisis intervention and welfare organization. PALF has a preferential option for the poorest and the weakest members of society—children, the differently-abled and the elderly. PAL Medical Travel Grants, PALF's main program for humanitarian and social development assistance, enable indigent Filipinos to go for medical treatment as charity or service patients for serious health conditions.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) is a 100 percent government-owned and controlled corporation. Part of its three-pronged mandate is to generate revenues for the Philippine government's socio-civic and national development programs and to help promote the Philippine tourism industry.
For the past 25 years, PAGCOR has integrated various corporate social responsibility programs (CSR) in its operations as a way of reaching out to less privileged Filipinos. In line with this, it undertakes various projects to promote education. One unique project is the conversion of used slot machine stands to school desks for donation to different public schools. The Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Education have helped PAGCOR develop a program to supplement existing government feeding programs and help address the worsening malnutrition situation in the country. Together with partner school-beneficiaries, the program provides balanced meals to undernourished children in day-care centers and public elementary schools in selected areas.
PAGCOR also reaches out to poor communities by providing free medical and dental services through medical missions in depressed and calamity-afflicted areas. Victims of disasters such as fires, typhoons and floods are also provided relief goods, medicines and other urgently needed items. In the environment field, PAGCOR supports the KapitBisig sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP).
